What is an Interlock® aluminum roof?

An Interlock® roof is made of interlocking aluminum panels, each locked to its neighbors on all four sides with the fasteners concealed under the panel above. Nothing is screwed through the weather surface. The panels are stamped to look like slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile.

The panels are made in North America by the manufacturer, Interlock Roofing. Metal Roofing Florida supplies the roof in Florida, certifies independent roofing contractors on the system and assigns one to your project. It does not install roofs. The installer is an independent, Florida-licensed roofing contractor, certified by the manufacturer on the Interlock® system and assigned to your project, who contracts with you directly and pulls the permit under their own license.

Offered in Florida: Slate, Cedar Shingle and Shake, plus solid copper as a separate material.

Why aluminum, for a Florida roof?

Because Florida's weather goes after exactly what aluminum doesn't have: tabs to lift, steel to rust and fibers to rot.

Hurricane wind

Florida has taken more hurricane strikes than any other state: 110 from 1851 to 2004, 35 of them major, according to the National Hurricane Center. Interlock® panels lock on all four sides with the fasteners out of the weather, NEMO P.E. Evaluated FL7263-R7 records their tested design pressures, and wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification.

Salt air on both coasts

Aluminum forms an oxide film that blocks further oxidation, and there is no steel inside an aluminum panel for salt spray to rust (ASM International), at a cut edge or anywhere else. Fasteners and flashings are matched to the aluminum system.

Sun, heat and humidity

Aluminum absorbs no water, so humidity, summer downpours and shade have nothing to rot. The Alunar® 70% PVDF finish is designed and tested to meet AAMA 2605 and carries a 30-year coating warranty. What shows on a cooling bill depends on attic insulation and ventilation too, so no one can honestly promise a percentage.

Hail

The Slate, Cedar Shingle and Shake profiles carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, verified by Intertek for Delta Building Products: the highest class in the standard. The Guardian warranty covers splitting, cracking and perforation from hailstones 1.5 inches or less.

Which profiles, and what paperwork does the building department see?

Slate, Cedar Shingle and Shake, in the manufacturer's Alunar® color range. The aluminum panels weigh about 0.41 to 0.58 lb per square foot installed, depending on profile (ICC-ES ESR-1790), a fraction of concrete tile or natural slate. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope.

In Florida the building department checks the product approval. Florida Product Approval NEMO P.E. Evaluated FL7263-R7, under the 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code, lists the Shingle/Slate, Diamond, Shake and Hidden Fastener Tile panels, tested to UL 1897, UL 580 and TAS 125. It is a non-HVHZ approval, which is why Miami-Dade and Broward counties are not served.

How does a roof get done through Metal Roofing Florida?

From first request to finished roof
StepWhat happens
1. Tell us about your roofA minute online, or a call to the toll-free line or the regional line for your area: the age of the roof, the current covering, and what is prompting the change.
2. A certified installer is assignedAn independent, Florida-licensed roofing contractor, certified by the manufacturer on this system, is assigned to your project. The installer visits, measures and looks at the deck, because the 25% rule and the fastening schedule both depend on what is actually up there.
3. The installer's written proposalThe price, the profile and color, the deck and underlayment work and the schedule, in writing, with the installer's Florida license number on it. The proposal and the contract are between you and the installer.
4. The installer does the workThe installer pulls the permit under their own license and installs the roof to the manufacturer's specification and the fastening the approval calls for. Workmanship terms come from the installer.
5. The Guardian warrantyOnce the installation contract is paid in full, the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing, covers the material and finish for you, and transfers once when you sell.

The installer's proposal, contract, permit and price are the installer's own. Metal Roofing Florida supplies the roof; the material warranty is issued by Interlock Roofing.

Questions, answered

Who installs aluminum roofing in Florida?

The installer is an independent, Florida-licensed roofing contractor, certified by the manufacturer on the Interlock® system and assigned to your project, who contracts with you directly and pulls the permit under their own license. Metal Roofing Florida supplies the roof but does not install it; the roof carries the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing.

Is aluminum roofing a good choice in Florida?

For a house you plan to keep, yes. Interlocked aluminum has no tabs for hurricane wind to lift, no steel for salt air to rust and nothing for humidity to rot, and the Interlock® roof is approved outside the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone under Florida Product Approval NEMO P.E. Evaluated FL7263-R7. Wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification.

Is the Interlock roof approved for Florida?

Yes, outside the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone. Florida Product Approval NEMO P.E. Evaluated FL7263-R7, under the 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code, lists the Shingle/Slate, Diamond, Shake and Hidden Fastener Tile panels, tested to UL 1897, UL 580 and TAS 125. Miami-Dade and Broward counties are in the HVHZ and are not served.

Is an aluminum roof better than a steel roof?

Both are metal roofs, but steel depends on its zinc or aluminum-zinc coating to keep from rusting, and aluminum has no steel to rust. Aluminum is also about a third of the density of steel. Steel roofing usually costs less up front. The steel vs aluminum guide sets out the differences.

How much does an aluminum roof cost in Florida?

It depends on the roof's area, pitch and complexity, what comes off, the profile and options such as the Class A assembly. The assigned installer measures the roof and puts a price in a written proposal; this site publishes no price, because one number would be wrong for most houses.

Can an aluminum roof go over my existing shingles?

Sometimes, only after inspection: a single layer of asphalt can be roofed over where the deck is sound and local code permits. Cedar shakes, concrete or clay tile and natural slate always come off first. The assigned installer inspects the roof and your building department has the final say.

Is an aluminum roof noisy in the rain?

Installed over a solid roof deck and underlayment, as residential Interlock® roofs are, it is not the drumming of bare metal on an open-framed barn. The deck and underlayment make the difference.

How long does an aluminum roof last?

Aluminum has been known to last over 100 years. That is a property of the metal, not a promise. What is in writing is the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty and the 30-year Alunar® coating warranty, plus the installer's own workmanship terms.
