Why do cedar roofs wear out in Florida?

Cedar takes on water, and Florida gives it plenty: humidity, summer downpours, shade and, on the coast, salt air. Shakes split, cup, curl, grow mildew and rot, and need cleaning and re-treating to last.

Aluminum absorbs nothing and cannot rot or rust, so there is nothing in the panel for water, sun or salt to work on.

Can you keep the cedar look?

Yes, with the Cedar Shingle and Shake profiles. Interlock's Shake profile has deep, hand-split shadow lines; the Cedar Shingle profile has the flatter look of a sawn cedar roof. Both are aluminum, lock on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, and weigh about 0.41 to 0.58 lb per square foot installed depending on profile (ICC-ES ESR-1790).

In Florida, NEMO P.E. Evaluated FL7263-R7 lists the Shake panel, and the Cedar Shingle pattern comes under its Shingle/Slate panel. If you live under an HOA, check its rules on profile and color first.

Does the cedar have to come off?

Yes. A cedar roof always comes off before an Interlock® roof goes on, and the assigned installer puts the tear-off in the written proposal from the start, along with any deck repair the inspection finds.

How does fire risk change?

Untreated cedar shakes are commonly unrated for fire. The Interlock® roof has Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, over GAF VersaShield® underlayment per ICC-ES ESR-2053 (ASTM E108). The rating belongs to the assembly, not to the panel alone, and aluminum itself does not ignite.

Who does the work?

The installer is an independent, Florida-licensed roofing contractor, certified by the manufacturer on the Interlock® system and assigned to your project, who contracts with you directly and pulls the permit under their own license. Metal Roofing Florida supplies the roof but does not install it; the roof carries the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing.

Questions, answered

Is aluminum a good replacement for cedar shakes?

Yes. The Cedar Shingle and Shake profiles keep the cedar look without the rot, splitting, moss and re-treatment, at about 0.41 to 0.58 lb per square foot installed.

Will it look like real cedar?

From the street it reads as a shake or shingle roof. The certified installer assigned to your project brings samples and colors to the visit so you can judge it on your house.

Can a metal roof go over my cedar shakes?

No. Cedar shingles and shakes always come off before an Interlock® roof goes on, and the tear-off is in the installer's written proposal.

Can my HOA refuse a metal roof in Florida?

A Florida HOA may regulate roof material, color and profile under its covenants, but a denial must be in writing and state the rule or covenant it relied on and the part of the project that does not conform (s. 720.3035(4)(a)). The Shake and Cedar Shingle profiles exist so the roof can match the look an association expects.
