What makes an aluminum shingle different?

An aluminum shingle has no steel inside it, so there is nothing to rust if the finish is scratched or cut. It is a stamped aluminum panel with a baked finish; exposed aluminum forms an oxide film that blocks further oxidation (ASM International). A steel shingle, by contrast, relies on its zinc or aluminum-zinc coating to keep the steel underneath from rusting.

Interlock® aluminum shingles lock to each other on all four sides. The fasteners sit under the course above, out of the weather, so the roof has no exposed screw heads and no rubber washers to age.

Which profiles are offered here?

Slate, Cedar Shingle and Shake in Florida. Slate is the most popular; Cedar Shingle and Shake give a wood look without rot or splitting. Colors come from the Alunar® range; the installer brings samples to the visit.

In Florida the building department looks for the product approval: NEMO P.E. Evaluated FL7263-R7 lists the shingle/slate and shake panels for the 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code outside the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone. Miami-Dade and Broward counties are not served.

Who installs them?

The installer is an independent, Florida-licensed roofing contractor, certified by the manufacturer on the Interlock® system and assigned to your project, who contracts with you directly and pulls the permit under their own license. Metal Roofing Florida supplies the shingles but does not install them; the material warranty is issued by Interlock Roofing.

Questions, answered

What are aluminum shingles?

Aluminum shingles are roofing panels stamped from aluminum sheet and finished with a baked coating, made to look like slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile. Interlock® aluminum shingles interlock on all four sides with concealed fasteners.

Do aluminum shingles rust?

No. Aluminum forms a thin oxide film that blocks further oxidation, and there is no steel inside an aluminum shingle to rust. That is why they suit homes in salt air.

Are aluminum shingles better than steel shingles?

Aluminum cannot rust and is about one-third the density of steel. Steel shingles usually cost less up front and depend on their zinc or aluminum-zinc coating to keep from rusting. Very large hail can leave a cosmetic mark on any metal roof.

How thick are Interlock aluminum shingles?

0.019 inch (Slate, Cedar Shingle); 0.0276 inch (Shake) base-metal aluminum, according to ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-1790. The alloy meets ASTM B209.

How much do aluminum shingles weigh?

About 0.41 to 0.58 lb per square foot installed, depending on profile (ICC-ES ESR-1790). Natural slate and concrete tile weigh many times that.

Where can I get aluminum shingles installed in Florida?

Request a quote on this site or call the toll-free line. Metal Roofing Florida assigns a certified Interlock installer to your project, who visits, measures and puts a proposal in writing.

Can aluminum shingles be installed over asphalt?

Sometimes, only after inspection: a single layer of asphalt can be roofed over where the deck is sound and local code permits. Cedar shakes, concrete or clay tile and natural slate always come off first.

What colors do aluminum shingles come in?

Colors come from the Alunar® range, with a 30-year Alunar® coating warranty on the finish. The manufacturer's site shows the current chart, and the assigned installer brings samples to the visit so you can judge them against the house.
